Instructions for the Mac App Store edition

Where is WattBar after I open it?

WattBar lives in the menu bar at the top of the screen and does not show a Dock icon. Click its lightning or battery icon to open the readings. Open WattBar again from Applications to see the welcome guide. Quit is in Settings at the bottom of the panel.

What do positive, negative and adapter watts mean?

Net battery power is estimated from voltage × current. Positive values flow into the battery; negative values flow out. Readings may be close to zero when the battery is full or charging is paused, even while the Mac uses power. Adapter power is its negotiated capacity, not actual input or power absorbed by the battery.

Why does it show —?

WattBar requires macOS 13 or later and a MacBook with a built-in battery. Desktop Macs and external UPS devices do not support this edition’s battery monitoring. If valid voltage or current data is missing, power appears as —; battery level and power status may still work. Choose Refresh Now in Settings.

Why does charging power not change every second?

The refresh interval controls how often WattBar reads data. System power sensors can update at a different pace, and charging varies with battery level, temperature and macOS battery protection. WattBar only displays readings; it does not change charging limits or system power policies.

How do I choose a language?

In System Settings → General → Language & Region → Applications, add WattBar and select English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese. Quit and reopen WattBar. The two editions have separate app identities. Numbers follow your region setting, independently of the interface language. Unsupported preferred languages fall back to English if no supported language matches.

How do I set Open at Login and updates?

Enable Open at Login in Settings at the bottom of the panel. If macOS asks for approval, follow the menu’s link to System Settings. The App Store provides software updates for the store edition.

Does the store edition include an app power ranking?

The store edition focuses on net battery power, battery level and adapter capacity. It does not inspect other apps’ CPU power or provide a system power breakdown. The separate website edition estimates system power and readable app CPU energy; Other / unattributed is a residual estimate, not a measurement of each component.
